"Attitude Adjustment Through Pain Compliance"

The Kubotan is not a weapon, but rather a tool. It is a cylindrical keychain that is made out of a light, durable plastic measuring about five inches long and .75 inches in diameter. One end has an ring for keys and other things that are normally attached on a keychain. The Kubotan comes in a variety of colors. With proper use, the Kubotan can be used as a tool for giving an individual equilizing defensive measure against a physical attack by another individual.

Disadvantages of other Self-Defense Aids and Weapons
  •  Handguns
    • Handguns are very lethal and illegal to carry in most instances
    • Accidents can occur where innocent people may be harmed/killed
    • It is rather heavy and rather cumbersome to carry on a daily basis
    • The handgun can be taken away and be used against you and others
    • Must take caution to keep away from children
  •  Mace/Pepper Sprays
    • Not effective in all cases
    • Must be careful not to point it toward oneself
    • Must point toward attacker
    • Wind direction may reduce effective range and may even cause the substance to be directed back at oneself
    • Can be taken away and used against you and others
    • Must take caution to keep away from children and infants
  •  Knife
    • Lethal
    • Can be taken away and used against you and others
    • Self-inflicted injuries possible
    • Must take caution to keep away from children and infants

Advantages of the Kubotan
  • Light and easy to carry
  • Functional - a key chain for everyday use
  • Does not look like a weapon -- non-threatening
  • Rugged -- hard to break
  • Easy to use
  • Inexpensive
  • If taken away by the attacker, they would need to know how to use it in order to effectively use against you. A larger, stronger person can do more damage without the Kubotan, so they probably won't use it against you.
  • Harmless to children who may find it and play with it.

Assumptions
  • Weapons are useful only if available in your hand at the time of assault
  • Many, if not most, assaults occur when an individual is going to or from a motor vehicle or when entering a door (house/apartment)
  • The level of effectiveness of the weapons is directly proportional to the level of training and skill in using the weapon
  • Handguns and Knives are normally not in your hand when going to or from a motor vehicle or when entering a door (house/apartment)
  • Assaults are generally made against "easy" targets.

KUBOTAN Instruction

Like any skill, training and practice is required for the effective use of the Kubotan. However, the Kubotan is very easy to learn how to use. It's actually sort of fun, too! Though the basics can be learned in about 20 minutes, a standard Kubotan training seminar takes about 1.5 hours. There is also a course that can take about 5 to 10 hours, depending on the number of students and the type of students (law enforcement officers or general public).

Elements of Instruction
  • The areas of training are the following:
  • Familiarization with the Kubotan -- What it is, what it isn't, and what it can do for you
  • Principles of Self-Defense
  • Your weapon[s]
  • The targets
  • Practical application
  • Review
